We began on a well-developed trail (Hackberry Springs Trail Access) strolling through the Sonoran Desert with spectacular views of the Superstitions from the Northwest.

Weaver’s Needle is clearly visible to as we traveled northeast toward La Barge Canyon. We stopped several times to admire the views.

After 1½ miles we began a descent to First Water Creek. Water was flowing in the creek, but only enough to wet the soles of our boots.

We crossed the creek and joined the Hackberry Springs Trail. We traveled along the creek and reached the spring at the base of a basalt cliff.

Yes, there’s water in First Water Creek.

We took a short break and explored the creek and springs.

We turned north then east on the Hackberry Springs Trail for about a mile before turning south. We passed Hackberry Mesa on our left heading up to a small saddle.

We turned right at onto the cutoff trail back to the trailhead. We crossed tributaries of First Water Creek twice and pass an abandoned horse corral before returning to the trailhead.
