Tempe Town Lake Full-Moon Kayak
Tempe
April 21, 2024
by Norma Scott

Six Trailblazers enjoyed the colorful sunset and full-moon to kayak Tempe Town Lake. This is the Trailblazers first kayak at Tempe Town Lake and third night kayak at an urban setting well lit up at night. The first was pitch darkness at Apache Lake, the second the moon ducked behind clouds as a downpour commenced, and this third night was first 100 degree day of the year.

Yanis debut his new to him 13 foot Old Town Kayak this evening. The trend is moving toward light day touring kayaks it seems. Kayaks were decorated with Chinese lanterns, solar lights, rope lights and glow sticks for a festive touch, and launched as the sun set on the lake. It was cooler on the water and very calm, this lake doesn’t allow powerboats. Casually we paddled first East to the head of the lake where the earthen dam was flooded over, causing one of the group to run aground on the dam, to the amusement of a fisherperson nearby. A challenge of night kayaking is low visibility and not seeing the shallows. The group then kayaked to the West end with buildings and sidewalks lighting up the lakeshore, and under the many bridges decorated in lights. We saw few others on the lake, a Swan and Duck pedal boat, standup paddleboards, kayaks and surf ski.
